Inventory turnover measures how often a business sells and replaces its stock. Frostspring Business Loans, a small-business funding broker in Dothan, Alabama, shows Houston County retailers how to calculate the ratio and days on hand with a labelled example, and explains what the number tells a lending partner about an inventory financing or credit line request.
Retail Leads Houston County, AL by Employer Count
Retail trade had 543 employer establishments in Houston County, Alabama in 2023, more than any other sector, and 213 of them had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). For a small shop, cash tied up in slow stock is cash not available for payroll or rent.
The Inventory Turnover Formula
Inventory turnover = cost of goods sold ÷ average inventory.
Cost of goods sold comes from the income statement for the period, usually a year. Average inventory is the opening inventory plus the closing inventory, divided by two, both valued at cost.
Days on Hand
Days inventory on hand = 365 ÷ inventory turnover.
This converts the ratio into something easier to picture: roughly how many days an item sits before it sells.
A Worked Example (Hypothetical)
A hypothetical gift shop records a cost of goods sold of $180,000 for the year. Its inventory at cost was $40,000 at the start of the year and $50,000 at the end.
- Average inventory: ($40,000 + $50,000) ÷ 2 = $45,000
- Turnover: $180,000 ÷ $45,000 = 4.0
- Days on hand: 365 ÷ 4.0 = about 91 days
The shop sells through its stock about four times a year, holding each item roughly three months. These figures are invented to show the arithmetic; they are not typical of any sector.
Reading the Number
Higher turnover usually means stock moves quickly; lower turnover means money sits on the shelves longer. Neither is good or bad on its own: a jeweler and a grocer have very different normal ranges. Compare your own turnover over time, and against what your suppliers or trade association report for your category.
Turnover by Product Line
A single turnover figure for the whole shop can hide a lot. Calculate it separately for your main product lines if your records allow. Fast lines may justify more stock; slow lines may be tying up the cash you are about to borrow. Partners respond well to an owner who knows which is which.
What Turnover Tells a Lending Partner
A partner considering inventory financing wants to know how quickly the goods it funds will turn back into cash. Steady or improving turnover supports a request; falling turnover raises the question of why more stock is needed.
If you restock in small, frequent orders, a revolving line of credit may fit better than financing each order separately.
Owner-Run Shops Without Staff
Houston County also had 692 retail businesses with no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024). For a one-person shop, turnover is often the only formal measure of how stock is doing, and it can be worked out from the same records used for the tax return.
Before Asking for Stock Funding
- Calculate turnover for the last two or three years.
- Identify slow lines that could be cleared before buying more.
- Have supplier invoices and an inventory report ready.
- Make sure the state sales tax account is current.
